Medical technology innovation from Munich opens new perspectives for the treatment of multi-organ failure in intensive care
Munich, 17 September 2026 – The team consisting of Dr Claus Jessen, Dr Tobias Bingold and Christoph Hüßtege has been nominated for the Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2026, the Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation. The nomination recognises the innovative strength of the ADVOS multi therapy, a technology platform designed to support the liver, kidneys and lungs while enabling targeted regulation of acid-base balance in critically ill patients.
The ADVOS multi therapy was developed by ADVITOS GmbH in Munich to provide new treatment options for people suffering from multi-organ failure and severe acidosis, and to advance intensive care medicine significantly. More than two decades of scientific research, development, technological pioneering and interdisciplinary collaboration have contributed to this innovation.
The starting point was the vision of Munich-based nephrologist Dr Bernhard Kreymann, who sought to rethink the treatment of severe liver dysfunction. From this idea emerged a therapy platform that today extends far beyond liver support and addresses key mechanisms involved in multi-organ failure.

Multi-organ failure is among the most serious complications encountered in intensive care units. While conventional approaches generally replace or support individual organ functions, the ADVOS multi therapy takes a holistic approach by viewing the body as an interconnected system and combining support for the three key detoxification organs, the liver, kidneys and lungs, within a single therapy platform.
At the heart of the technology is a patented albumin-based blood purification technology. In addition to removing water-soluble and protein-bound toxins, it enables active, patient-specific regulation of acid-base balance. This capability represents a significant technological breakthrough and fundamentally distinguishes the ADVOS multi therapy from previously available treatment approaches.

Technology in the Service of People
The ADVOS multi therapy combines expertise from intensive care medicine, nephrology, hepatology, biochemistry and process engineering. At its core is the technological replication of the body’s natural detoxification and regulatory processes. Its development required many years of close collaboration between scientists, engineers and medical and nursing professionals.
At the same time, the evidence base continues to be strengthened through prospective, randomised multicentre clinical studies. From the outset, particular attention was paid to ensuring the safe and practical integration of the technology into routine intensive care. The aim was to develop a powerful yet intuitive therapy platform capable of supporting intensive care teams in the treatment of their most critically ill patients.

Three Future Technologies Reach the Final
Alongside the ADVOS multi therapy, two other forward-looking projects have been nominated for the Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2026. These projects address current challenges in the fields of the energy transition and information and communication technology, joining the ADVITOS innovation in this year’s final.
By selecting the three finalist teams, a distinguished jury recognises innovations that combine scientific and technological excellence with tangible social and economic benefits.
Decision to Be Announced on 18 November 2026 in Berlin
The winning team of the Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2026 will be announced during the award ceremony on 18 November 2026 in Berlin. On that occasion, Federal President Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier will personally present the award to the winning team.
The Deutscher Zukunftspreis is awarded annually and is considered one of Germany’s most prestigious honours for technology and innovation. It is the only award presented by the Federal President. Research and development teams cannot apply directly but must be nominated by authorised institutions. An independent jury selects three finalist teams each year. The prize honours outstanding achievements in technology, engineering and the natural sciences that have resulted in market-ready solutions with demonstrated benefits for society and the economy.
For ADVITOS, the nomination represents a significant milestone and serves both as validation of the company’s strategic direction and as motivation for the continued development of the technology. Through further clinical studies, international collaborations and the expansion of manufacturing and commercial activities, ADVITOS is working to make this technology available to patients worldwide.
